Performance Management Process

 

Performance Planning (Phase 1)

 Performance Planning is the first step in the performance management cycle. It involves setting clear expectations, goals, and performance standards for employees at the beginning of the performance period.

  1. Goal Setting

    • Establish SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).

    • Align goals with departmental and organizational objectives.

  2. Clarifying Roles & Responsibilities

    • Define key duties, tasks, and performance expectations.

    • Ensure the employee understands their job priorities.

  3. Competency Expectations

    • Identify required skills, behaviors, and competencies.

    • Explain how these competencies impact performance.

  4. Development Planning

    • Identify skill gaps and agree on training or development activities.

    • Create an individual development plan (IDP).

  5. Resource & Support Identification

    • Discuss the tools, training, and support needed for successful performance.

  6. Agreement on Performance Standards

    • Describe how success will be measured.

    • Explain evaluation criteria and timelines.

  7. Documentation & Sign-off

    • Both manager and employee document and agree on the performance plan

    • The planning process should be two way dialogue between employee and supervisor
